This is my first personal piece of the year, featuring Kiel Figgins' BlackThorn rig in Quixel Megascans' Dark Ruins. This project had a lot of learnings, such as layering and space switching. I couldn't have done it without the help of online resources from Aleksandr Rudenko, Pavel Barnev, and Mark Masters.
Character animations are all keyed by hand in Maya (except the hair), and rendered in Unreal Engine. Additional VFX was done using Embergen, Niagara Fluids and Sprite Emitters, to be paired with the Dark Ruins' own VFX. Some adjustments were made to the character textures in Substance Painter to fit the realism in the scene, and lastly, post production was done in Davinci Resolve and Premiere Pro. Beyond-FX with Keith Guerrette and VFX Apprentice by Jason Keyser really helped me figure the VFX part out, two more great resources that I always look forward to and can't wait to learn more about.
Blocking stage with reference from Motion Actor Inc
Additional help with Morgan Loomis' Center of Mass script to help visualize accurate body movements and positionings.
Splining stage and focusing on pushing the animation beyond the real life reference for exaggeration of expression and line of actions.
Motion Trail adjustments from spline to final polished stage.
Final Polish with added animations to the start and ending. Cloth animations added by hand keying secondary motions and offsetting keyframes, and trying out Overlapper for the hair.
Breakdown of some simple VFX made to bring further expression to the animation.
